Chemical treatment through Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is an effective method for removing fats, proteins, and suspended solids, which are typically elevated in dairy industry wastewater. The process involves the addition of chemical coagulants and flocculant aids—such as polymers or iron and aluminum salts—that facilitate the agglomeration of pollutants, enabling them to attach to the fine air bubbles introduced in the system.
This mixture is then directed into a flotation tank, where the solids and fats rise to the surface and are removed as surface sludge. The clarified effluent can then proceed to subsequent biological treatment stages.
Proper operation of the DAF unit in dairy wastewater treatment contributes significantly to the reduction of organic load (BOD and COD), enhancing the performance of downstream biological processes and minimizing the risk of overloading the biological stage. Moreover, the reduction of lipids and suspended solids protects the mechanical equipment from fouling and blockages, thereby extending the system’s operational lifespan.
With the appropriate selection and dosing of chemical agents, DAF offers an efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solution for managing waste from the dairy industry.
